Basics of Statistics Used in Dissertation

One of the difficult and anxious stages while writing a research paper is to analyze the reports and conclude the trends with appropriate statistics. There are different stages of research such as the design of the research, questionnaire formulation, pilot study and test conduction, deployment of data management systems. After the stage of data collection, one needs to know certain basics of statistical tests in order to interpret the results in an appropriate standard manner.

As it is said, statistics is the core of any research. Research usually has following steps of data gathering, data cleaning and then analysis of the same. It involves collecting and cleaning the data in the first stage. And then, formulation of hypothesis and assigning variables and data sizes to the given data.   1. Descriptive statistics 
  2. Inferential Statistics

A basic understanding of these types will help in choosing an appropriate analytical tool and then designing an appropriate statistical test. Parametric and Non-parametric also requires certain pre-requisite statistical tests which forms a part of statistical analysis. The analysis reports first include the details of such prerequisite tests .Then the hypothesis tests of parametric or non-parametric is designed and the significance tests are carried out on such hypothesis.

Principal component factor analysis (PCA) is one of the few basic analyses done for any kind of a research paper. PCA analysis helps in minimizing the number of variables in conducting a cause and effect analysis. The factor causes are reduced by using a user defined variable to represent a bunch of inter-related and co-related variables. Analysis of data result is that an appropriate substitution is made to the given original factor variables with a variable as determined by PCA analysis. Once the PCA analysis is done, one can proceed to multi-variate analysis to determine the number of significant independent factors affecting a given dependent variable.

Research Topic, Availability of Time, Availability and type of Data, choice of software determines the type of analytical tool to be used.
